Making A Wish

I got a call from a friend about taking a young man fishing, & it was an experience of a lifetime.

When i hung up the phone after talking to Krissy Wejebe about the foundation she & Mikey had created in her fathers name i set a few things into motion & we made the #1st Wish come true. My good friends at Plantation Boat Mart let me use their new 37 Sea Hunter for the trip, my neighbor Wyland hooked up with us for a few photos & gave Tyler a book of his art, Coach Jimmy Johnson met us at the docks of PBM for an interview & a sighed football. We really showed Tyler & his family a Florida Keys Experience, He caught a few sailfish as well. You will be able to see all this on this Season of The Spanish Fly TV Show. Thanks to EVERYBODY who helped out with this great trip!

Up Date After Hurricane Isaac

Hello Everybody
Just wanted to check in and let everybody know that the sun is shining and we are all cleaning up after the storm. Life is getting back to normal here in islamorada, we had winds up to about 50mph and lots of rain but no major problems. The boats are full of leaves so my plan is to get out the scrub brush and ready them for next weeks charters. If you are looking to get away and go fishing i have a few days open the next few weeks. Just before Isaac the sightfishing on the flats for redfish was really good and i had an old client bring his gransdon out on his first trip to the Florida Keys. I am happy to report he caught & released his first red on fly, and we had a big snook on but lost it to a overhanging mangrove shoreline.
Its good to see the sunshine after a few days of constant rain!  Guess I better get off the computer and outside to scrub those boats.....  Catch Ya Later  Capt. Greg

Islamorada Tarpon

Fishing  today in the islamorada area was good for my client Terry Kirk of Texas. He caught & released his largest Tarpon to date, we have fished together for years, & have had a great 3 days of fishing.

My good fishing buddy Chris Fredricks brought his family down to escape the cold weather is Baltimore,  of course the weather was perfect while he was on land. I know he was wishing we were fishing in the flats skiff looking for laid up tarpon while I had his kids out catching kingfish, tuna, grouper & these nice barracuda out on the atlantic side. He got his chance yesterday but it was cloudy & the wind was 20-25mph, so we switched gears & took his granddaughter out to catch her first saltwater fish.

The highlight of the 3 day trip was a big party put on by the powerboat association. We all rafted up for a little fun with the gang from Plantation Boat Mart.

DJ Laz came down from miami & had the girls dancing, as the boats from the poker run raced by, It was a great afternoon.

The Tarpon are starting to show up with this warm weather we are experiencing here in the keys, i was out in the backcountry today & yesterday & found laid up poons, & a few free jumpers. Looks like an early season out back which is right up my alley...  tight lines

In this photo are the Mate's on the GOTCHA & the Angler is my good buddy James Kline. Two days ago Capt. Mel on the GOTCHA out of Holiday Isles Marina in Islamorada took James out for a day of Sailfishing, The Sailfish in the photo was Caught, Photographed & Released.

I believe it is one of the best catches i have ever heard of. The fish was fought for over 45min, & anybody who has tried to catch an Atlantic Sailfish on Fly can tell you it is one of the tough ones to mark off your list,  I got a call from Tim a few hours after the release & when he told me of the catch i said put your kid on the phone i want to congratulate him. We had a short talk & he told me all about his catch.
I dont have any children, but if i did have a son i would want one just like this young man, James is 11 years old & the son of my best friend Capt. Tim Kline, one of the best guides in the keys.

This week Capt.Tim & Capt. Mel will be on board the GOTCHA fishing in the Islamorada SAILFLY Tournament, They are past Grand Champions of the event.  James will be in School, but i hope he plays hookie & watches his dad catch one.   Good Luck Guys....
